Matching beats can be tricky if you have not mastered the basics. It can be approximately pointless to even try to match beats if the basics are foreign to you.
Matching the beats at the same speed while in a mix without convention is down right foolhardy. But this report will attempt to break it down starting with the Dj equipment.
Turntable Platter
If you don't have the right tools then you are wasting your time. Matching beats with distinct tempos so far apart with appropriate Technics Sl1200 turntables won't cut it.

TECHNICS SL-1200MK2 Automatic Stereo Turntable Overview
A die-cast aluminum body, heavy rubber base, and a lack of unnecessary components or empty space allow the 1200MK2 to absorb unwanted vibrations that could otherwise interfere with the sound. The 1200MK2's ultra-low-speed motor and high torque (1.5kg/cm) allow for super quick start-ups (0.7 sec) and stops. Allows for accurate quartz-locked pitch adjustments throughout its 16 percent (+/-8) range. Instead of just spinning the platter, the classic Technics Direct-Drive system actually incorporates it into the motor, reducing the number of parts that can malfunction and making consistent, accurate speeds possible. It's a system that has been providing fast start-up times and unequalled responsiveness for over thirty years. Wow & flutter 0.01% WRMS, rumble -78dB.Customer Reviews

Your turntable needs to have the pitch lock function or you will never match beats at distinct B.P.M.'s. Here is a list of 5 turntables that have this key lock function:
1. Technics Sl-1210M5G Pro Turntable
2. Stanton T.80 Digital Direct Drive Turntable
3. Numark Ttx1 Turntable
4. Stanton T.120C Super High Torque Direct Drive Turntable
5. Vestax Pdx-2300Mkiipro Turntable You can see all of these Direct Drive Turntables.
Basically the key lock function on the pitch bend allows you to speed up the tempo of the report without having that chipmunk sound.
What is the "Alvin and the Chipmunks" sound you may well ask?
If you've ever inhaled helium from a balloon and noticed how your voice suddenly changes to a higher frequency that is the chipmunk sound. (Please do not inhale helium for any reason.)
By having this highlight you can now match beats at totally distinct tempos while maintaining a clean mix.
Now if you don't have this equipment and all you have are appropriate direct drive tables not to worry. You are still in good shape.
When attempting to match beats while a mix it's a good idea to have a predetermined habit if you are just starting out. Practicing in your room and trying distinct mixes will only advantage you in the long run.
Write down the songs in your mixes as you play them out. Matching beats while a mix means you have to know the songs and have a sense of rhythm.
For example, the key to matching beats is to pick songs within +/- 5 B.P.M.'s. You can get away with some ultimate stuff if you are creative but a general pitch bend on a deck can only do so much.
When you have a song that is close in B.P.M.'s but is running a itsybitsy slow in your headphones when played against what you hear on your speakers use the pitch bend fader, to give what you hear in your headphones, more speed.
Move the pitch bend gently to the ( + ) side not the ( - ) side. Continue to do this until the beats match.
Sometimes you may have both records playing at the same time in the speakers while mixing and one of the songs may sound like its going to fast or too slow. If it is going too fast push the pitch bend to the ( - ) side ever so slightly. If it is going too slow push the pitch bend to the ( + ) side.
A more sophisticated ways of adjusting the mix to match beats is to give the report a itsybitsy push at the canter near the spindle to speed the report up. Or to slow the report down put a finger on the side of the platter while it is spinning ever so slightly.
If you do it too hard it will throw your entire mix off. These two tips need to be mastered before you attempt them at a live set.
